This activity is designed to strengthen students’ phonemic awareness—their ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. By isolating beginning, middle, and ending sounds, students build the auditory foundation necessary for blending, segmenting, and ultimately decoding words in print. This multisensory task supports early readers and struggling readers by helping them tune their ears before connecting to letters on the page.
